What exactly dictates the compression ratio of a Rover V8 engine? Is it a matter of the top of the piston having a deeper dish shape than a higher compression engine? Or are there other differences as well? Do the test again with some oil down the bores to see if the readings improve, if so it is ring related. Convert all the readings to psi and I can be more specific. J Hello, ive just done a compression test on my rover v8, the heads are Sd1 type and it has a comp head gasket, when tested i got 110psi on all 8 cylinders, it sounds abit low. . Warm up the motor to running temp and then switch it off. Pull all the plugs and disconnect the power to the coil. Put the compression gauge into each cylinder and get .
Do a cylinder leak test to check for blow-by or damaged valve seats. Also look at your engine's crankcase ventilation system for blockages and general condition of the . Compression pressure gauge Test 1. Start and run engine until normal engine operating temperature is achieved (thermostat open). 2. Remove all spark plugs. 3. . Generally V8 engines runing normally will be around the 150/160 psi mark. This is a very broad statement for those that are unfamiliar with compression and engines. To prevent initial confusion I'd like to say that . Turned out one of the cam lobes was so worn it was barely opening number 7 inlet valve. I bet if I had compression tested it, it would have read less than the rest. Whip the inlet off and have a look - the cam gives you .
The engine has nominal compression ratio of 9.35:1 with the heads skimmed .006" and using tin head gaskets with the outer four bolts only torqued to 30 lb.ft
RV8 3.5 SD1 9.75:1 - Compression Test results. by Prophead » Fri Jun 29, 2018 12:18 pm. Further to my previous post I have carried out a compression test. Method used:-. . I did a compression test as instructed by a local (non-land rover) mechanic on my 4.0 this weekend. It has around 175,000 miles on it. Looked up online to see where the numbers should be and discovered that I was supposed to do the test full open throttle which I did not do and the spark plugs are back in. To prevent initial confusion I'd like to say that compression test results very much depend on the compression ratio (C/R) of the engine being tested. . The ratio's I know of for the Rover 4.6 engine using standard size . Good Day Everyone I have an opportunity to buy a 3.5 V8 Range Rover motor. The motor runs quietly and pulls pretty well but I've asked the seller to have a compression test done, I've attached the results. The images are not very clear, they were BBM'd to my wife who e-mailed them to me. If I am reading the results properly then: The wet tests showed: 1. 8.5

Hi All, Im new to the forum. I thought I would start by asking for some thoughts regarding a compression test I just did on my P38. The rover is a 97 4.0 SE with a Prins propane system. The car had a rad hose leak while my dad was driving it about 8 months ago which caused an overheat. . 2005 4.4 V8 Range Rover Sport. 1980 2 door Range Rover .

Mar 3, 2019 #1 Hi All, When doing compression tests in the past I have always removed all the spark plugs at the start and then . Well just yesterday I did a compression test on the left bank of my P38 4.0 rover V8. The compression rating is also 9.35:1 and I got readings between 160-180 PSI. Hot engine, throttle open 4-5 cycles (needle steady), no oil added I was trouble shooingt a suspected head gasket issue, but concluded (so far) it's an exhaust issue. I was surprised to discover the engine has a low compression ratio of 8.13:1. Going from the engine numbers list over on the V8 Owners Forum we think it may originate from a '70 - '83 Range Rover. Whatever, it is what it is, but could it be made to be "a bit more"? I am quite literally "asking for a friend"! V8 3.9 compression test, Question to those in the know I just did a compression test on the 3.9 Disco i bought from auction. i did have it running, and it had a miss Here is the results, measurements taken from the LH bank, 1st cylinder closest to the radiator then moving towards the firewall, then same on the RH bank all in PSI

The lower compression engines have less power but will be less strained and will run on lower octane fuel. Range rovers were usually high compression 9:1 (ish), the Land rover stage 1 was 8:1 or so. Some of the earlier V8's were nearer 10:1 and woulad need to run on super unleaded or with an octane booster to prevent pinking! a small amount of oil down the bore just before you do a compression test will tell you whether its leaking piston rings or not. could also be valves . Henry_b Think outside, no box required. Posts 15,487 Location somewhere else. May 7, 2020 #5 That compression is low for a Rover V8.. A tired RV8 should be atleast 150psi.. the difference . I'm doing work on my 2000my 4.0l V8 and before i start I'd like to do a compression test. Never done this on a computerised vehicle before, so wondered if i need to do anything special? . Land Rover series IIA 2286cc petrol 1962MY, Range Rover P38 4.0V8 Petrol/LPG auto HSE 2000MY .
A compression test will show overall lower compression. If you squirt some oil into the spark plug hole and rerun the test, the compression will be higher because the oil around the rings will temporarily provide a better seal. In summary, a compression test tests for a blown head gasket, cracked head, burnt valve, cracked block, burnt piston . If the compression number rises, you have a bad rings. If the same, then you have a valve problem. A leak down test is a better way to go, but not many people have the tools to do that. A leakdown test is the only way an aircraft piston engine is .
could someone please tell me what sort of reading (psi) i should be getting on a low compression 3.5 (8.13:1) rover v8 in a 110, on the compression test. cheers. Hot engine, throttle open 4-5 cycles (needle steady), no oil added I was trouble shooingt a suspected head gasket issue, but concluded (so far) it's an exhaust issue. BTW my mechanic made a compression test and it's very interesting to compare with the one poor Jonathan Matthews it's last British owner (till Feb 2021) and once member of our club had made on the 23 Oct 2018. . for a Rover V8 engine of 3.5 litres and a Leyland P76 V8 engine of 4.4 litres using pistons that provide differing compression . For a compression test, remove all spark plugs, remove fuel pump relay. Install compression gauge into a spark plug hole. Crank engine for about 7 seconds. Record reading and repeat on remaining cylinders. 140psi is about the lowest acceptable reading, 160 is about average, 190psi is excellent. Readings should all be within 10% of each other.
Found a V8, 180k Km's, had a land rover mech do an inspection as the car did not come with a service history. He found a wide variation in values on a compression test. Cyl's 1,2,7,8 were within 150 - 140 psi (good) cyl's 3,4,5,6 were 140 - 120 psi (not good). I fink it might be telling me "burnt valves". Do you know what are the specs for the 5.0 v8 Supercharged Compression? I tested compression on my car with all spark plugs removed and with closed throttle. . (compared with identical range rover), but the reason why I decided to measure compression is misfires in bank2(2,4,6,8). I performed wet compression test with oil and readings are . 3rd mistake: Compression test after timing job. Do a compression test before doing a timing job. I discovered after doing the timing job (and one head), it’s still not starting. I discovered valves on bank 1 were bent. Replaced valves, timing, head gaskets, put back together and she fired up and drove great! 4th mistake: Replaced starter in vain. More than anything else, what you want out of a compression test is consistency between the readings on the cylinders. It is far better to have all eight cylinders having compression within 10% of each other than to have seven showing 170 PSI with one blowing 120 PSI. Ideally, all eight around 150-160 PSI and you should be very happy.
A compression test is simple to learn and only requires a few basic tools. From a mechanical perspective, you will need to know how to properly remove the spark plugs on the vehicle or equipment you are testing and properly disable the ignition system and fuel system, the latter if the vehicle is fuel injected. For carbureted engines, you can choose to disable the fuel supply . 2011 North American V-8 compression test- help needed. Thread starter Shoshone; Start date Dec 19, 2023; .
